This is the third in a series of posts from the author of The Three Levels of Self-Awareness. The first one, The Three Levels of Self-Awareness: What Our Inner Scientist Is Saying, was inspired by the work of psychologist and self-help guru Robert Sternberg.
I love Robert Sternberg, but his concept of the Self-Awareness Levels is a little off. The Self-Awareness Levels are not just about mental awareness, but about being aware of our own mental states, how they change, and what we can do to manage and change them. For example, if I want to get a new haircut, I can’t just think, “Hey, I’m in the mood for a haircut.
Robert Sternberg’s Self-Awareness Levels are just a more comprehensive description of the Inner Scientist. Instead of just having the Inner Scientist tell you that you’re bored, hungry, or stressed, you might like to think that if you’re not aware of your inner state, you’re not aware of your inner state. The Inner Scientist wants to make sure that you are aware of your inner state and, importantly, that you can change your inner state to something you want to be aware of.
So, like any of our three levels of self-awareness, the Inner Scientist is only as good as its self-awareness. If its self-awareness isn’t good enough, then its self-awareness could be less than optimal. While this is not a problem, it is a reminder that if you dont pay attention to your inner state, you could be on autopilot.
Being aware of your inner state is the first step to becoming an Inner Scientist. As a student of meditation, I know that this requires a lot of self-awareness. I know that when I don’t pay attention to my inner state I am on autopilot. This is why I think my self-awareness can be as good as anyone’s if we all use it to get our own inner state to be aware of.
So what is self-awareness? It’s the ability to know what we are feeling, what we are thinking, what we are doing. As an example, if you are struggling to find the right color for your room, you might find that you have trouble with noticing whether it’s pink or blue, it’s really a matter of when you can really see and feel it. It’s a way of knowing when your inner state is on autopilot and when you should pay attention to it.
Self-awareness is the ability to know what you are feeling, thinking, and doing. Self-awareness is like the ability to see a rainbow, or the ability to read a book, or the ability to know what the difference is between a chocolate chip cookie and a chocolate chip cookie dough. Its kind of like what a person learns to be aware of when they have a certain brain activity. So it is a way of being able to pay attention to what is going on inside you.
Now with autopilot, we only have to pay attention when we are doing something that is in our self-interest. With self-awareness, we can see what is going on inside of us and what kind of action we are going to take. Self-awareness makes us aware of what we are doing and then we can either decide to change it or ignore it.
Autopilot is what we call the stage when actions are carried out without thought. This is not something that is often discussed in our world, but it is something that is quite normal in our lives. We can talk about this in terms of the difference between being in autopilot and being conscious. When we are in autopilot, things are carried out without thought. When an action is done, it is done without a thought.
In fact, we’re in autopilot quite a lot in our everyday lives. That’s because our brains are set up to be in autopilot mode, which means they are unable to think about the reasons why we’re doing things. In fact, we don’t seem to really know why we’re doing things because our minds are locked in autopilot mode. And this is where awareness comes in.
